Trip update #2: First Flight

This is mostly a post to let you, dear readers, know that Jodi and I are still mostly alive, though in a very zombie-like state. The flight from Denver to Reykjavik was smooth, though sleep eluded us. The sun came up while we rode the bus in from Keflavik, just in time to illuminate some of the countryside as we cruised past. We got off at the main bus terminal, grabbed our packs and chuffed our way over the hill to our first hostel, Kex, which is a really neat place at first glance.

We can't check into our room until 2pm, at which point I'm sure we'll take a nap and ruin our plan of getting on a good sleep schedule right away. Tomorrow will be for exploring; we'll take a few days to gather stories, photos and rest a bit for a more entertaining post.

I'm not sure where the superstition came from, but apparently bananas are bad luck while fishing. Try to bring a banana on a charter boat and you may well get tossed in the drink. A Longer Post About Squid Fishing Puget Sound

Since moving out to Washington from Nebraska, I have had many new fishing experiences, from steelheading in the S rivers to salmon fishing from Puget Sound beaches.  The most unique experience yet, however, is squidding. Squid fishing is far different from the bass fishing in Nebraska, which we did under the sun on warm mornings, stalking along the edges of sand-pits and casting plastic worms to fish we saw cruising along the bank. The season starts to heat up in October, as the first large schools of squid start to make their way south into Puget Sound. Those brave and/or stupid enough (i.e, me) to pursue the wee cephalopods in the cold and damp must wait until after the sun sets to head out.  The anglers go and stand on a dock or a pier that has lights; squid like to hang around the fringes of the light, darting in to grab shrimp and small fish feeding on the plankton drawn to the illuminated water.  The anglers use long, whippy rods to lob their multi-pronged lures,

New Year's Goals

Happy new year, dear readers! Last year I decided that fishing was too much fun, and I needed to give myself some goals to strive towards. This ended up being even MORE fun, and I recommend it to anyone who angles. So, on this first day of the New Year, I've decided to share last year's goals and results, and tell you what I'll be chasing this coming year. First: The old! Gooooooooaaaaaaaaal! Well, I got a few of the fish, and a good portion of the places and other goals. I'm blown away that I didn't make it to the ocean once; also that I couldn't catch a shark. Dogfish (sharks) are known as a nuisance to people who catch them while salmon fishing and don't realize how neat they are. I never even tried for the chum or sockeye salmon, so no surprise that I didn't catch those guys. Those goals that weren't met this year get to go on to... My goals for 2014!
